As an Owner operator of Hotshot trucks, with drivers that are OTR and drive thousands of miles weekly, I was always cringing at the fuel bills from the big truck stops on the road. Due to the unavailability of fuel in many states, they often must fuel where they can find it. Sometimes they have to pay full price at a Loves or TA which results in hundreds of dollars each week.
We tried all the fuel cards; Motive, RTS, Pilot, Comdata, Mudflap. They each gave little to zero discounts. Mudflap in certain areas is good but they are mostly mom and pop stations and not always off the main highways or Interstates. Time is money. Now, I love TruckSmarter and it is great in certain areas. Southwest and Mavericks stations, hard to beat. I highly recommend them as part of your fuel savings plan. Every smart operator will use several fuel cards and find the best for their area.
A few months ago, we discovered Greenlane Fuel card. It was an immediate hit with me and my drivers. We were able to get consistently great savings at the major Fuel centers such as Loves, TA and others. No longer were we having to find the off the beaten path, mom and pops, the Quick Trips or Buc-ees. We were able to save 60¢/gal on average but we’ve saved as much as $1.30 before and on some routes, without missing a beat. With Greenlane, my trucks can get high quality fuel at the truck stops on the highway. Now we can save everywhere our trucks travel.
Like all cards, some states are better than others. We have learned to look for the better discounts and fill up there. With Greenlane, there is always one coming up sooner or later. This single handedly helped keep my business afloat. We were bleeding money buying fuel. It is still our biggest expense but we have a plan to do what we can do to save now.
Greenlane Fuel cards are accepted at 1,350 travel stops nationwide, including Love’s, T/A, Petro, Speedway, Sunoco, Stripes, Maverik, and Kum & Go.
Why is fueling at the major truck stops a big win for you over the mom and pops? Truck stops have higher quality fuel and can help keep your diesel engine cleaner, healthier and less contaminants such as water. I have experienced bad fuel, clogged filters, and low fuel pressure from bad fuel. I recently had to add inline filters, have my entire fuel line and tanks cleaned out. This was all before we started using Greenlane almost exclusively.
What are some other advantages of using Greenlane? You can still use your loyalty cards at the pumps. You can still get free showers. You can do what I call double dipping; by attaching your cashback card to your Greenlane card. You can even use pay with your fuel card in the app like the Mudflap card as long as it’s a visa or mastercard. This means you don’t have to apply for another card or line of credit. Greenlane now has an EFS corporate card in partnership with WEX if you ask for this
Greenlane offer IFTA reports and an easy to use fuel finder. It is not all garbled and congested to the point of not being able to find where you are or on your route such as Mudflap. I have complained to Mudflap about this, and they are aware of this problem.
We use the Truck stop finder as a tool to find places to sleep, shower, eat… you can see where the next truck stops are, the distance and work it into your HOS planning. I have been down to 25 minutes of driving time and seen that the next Loves was 11 miles away. I made it with minutes to spare. Plus, I can see where the lowest fuel prices are.
Now, this is what I consider next to lower fuel prices, the best feature of using Greenlane. Cashback for joining and cashback for referring members. Through our affiliation with Greenlane, they are offering $25 worth of free fuel just to try them out. I want to emphasize this point, every member, and every friend that I have turned on to use them, loves them. So, you can earn money by referring others to use them. I have a friend that has earned $250 from referrals. An easy sell.
As the administrator of Hotshot-USA Resource network as well as an owner operator, I knew this card was worthy of our members and worked hard to make them a partner to our network. Many of our members have signed up but many have not, which to me is a no brainer. Why would you not want to get free fuel or save money? I guess many have heard the promises before. I know RTS told me that I would get such great savings and it amounts to about twelve cents. Motive is just as bad.
Another more important plan of action to run your truck and business successfully is to utilize auxiliary fuel tanks. My trucks each have auxiliary tanks and can carry 80 to 100 gallons. They pay for themselves over and over. You find the best place to fuel up, and you can save anywhere from $50 to a hundred per fill. If you fill up 4-5 times a week, that can be $500 a truck. If you have a couple trucks that pays a truck payment.
If you don’t have an auxiliary fuel tank, you are sorely miss out. Not only the great savings in buying fuel right, but the time and peace of mind from not having to constantly fuel up and worry about running out. You can install several different styles and sizes; we even have a great supplier for them with Midway Tanks. They can fit you with the best for your truck. Check our Hotshot Connections for Midway tanks, they are offering a free installation kit to our members.
